Concrete Repairs

The core business of Grade 2 Structural Repairs Ltd is the repair and renovation of defcetive concrete on a range of structures. These included buildings (low rise and multi-storey), car parks, bridges and tunnels.

The concrete in these structures normally comprises cement, sand, aggregates and steel reinforcement. Cement is an unlikely product and, while it remains in this state, the structure will have a long trouble free life span.

However, due to a number of reasons such as design, environment and workmanship during construction, the alkaline state can become acidic. Once the acidity reaches the steel reinforcement this will begin to rust, which will then expand resulting in stresses being set up within the concrete that will cause cracking and eventually spalling.

The rate at which this happens depends on a range of factors including the location of the structure, the design, the concrete mix design and the method of placing and whether a protective coating was applied at the time of initial construction.

The concrete repair process involves the removal of all deteriorated and spalled concrete, normally using mechanical breakers, to the rear of the exposed reinforcement. The steelwork is cleaned and treated to prevent further corrosion,. A hand placed repair mortar, with similar properties to the original concrete, is packed into the repair in layers with the final layer having a trowel finish similar to the existing.

Further protection can be given to the concrete by the application of a decorative anti-carbonation coating.

Also, where there is likelihood of further corrosion due to ingress of chlorides, it may be beneficial to include sacrificial anodes within the repairs or a migrating corrosion inhibitor to the full surface area of the structure.
